COACHING for fantastical fiction & outdoors literature

Helping you craft stories that reach magical heights

Fantastic feedback, thank you! You’ve pointed out a bunch of things I hadn’t thought of and showed me how to tighten my story with other suggestions. I also found your feedback on my strengths very useful and confidence-building.

is my manuscript ready for this stage?

Yes! What I love about offering coaching is how flexible it is. Whatever stage you’re at with your novel manuscript or short story collection, coaching can be tailored to you.

That said, coaching can work particularly well for writers who aren’t quite ready for a full manuscript review yet, or who haven’t got the budget for it. If you’re new to writing, it can be difficult to know how to improve your skills. Coaching allows you to get fully personalised feedback. You can book multiple sessions upfront or just one at a time – whatever works best for you.

I always suggest an initial (free) Zoom call to discuss what exactly you’re looking to get out of coaching, so we can make sure that the feedback and advice is a good fit for your goals and your budget. This conversation can be had over email if preferred.

what does this service involve?

This service is completely personalised, so there’s no fixed answer. However, my most popular coaching options include:

  • Coaching on how to improve as a writer or how to tighten up one specific area of your craft, such as dialogue. I’ll review an extract of your writing and send you suggestions on how to move forwards, including any exercises which might be helpful and any craft book recommendations.
  • Developmental-edit style feedback on a short story, to tighten it up before submission to a lit mag or competition.
  • Review of bullet-pointed plot structure, including subplots and character arcs. This can be really helpful to make sure the overall shape of your novel is working.
  • Review of opening 5,000 or 10,000 words.

what will i receive?

Written feedback in the form of an editorial letter and/or comments on the manuscript itself and/or a Zoom call, depending on your budget and what sort of feedback you’re looking for.

how much will it cost?

I always like to be really transparent regarding pricing because I know how much of a hurdle it can be, but as this service is completely personalised, it’s difficult to give exact prices here.

As a very rough guide, one-hour Zoom calls start from £50 an hour, with the price increasing if you want me to review any writing extracts beforehand. Written feedback on an extract tends to cost around £195 for 5,000 words.
