developmental editing for fantastical fiction
& outdoors literature

Helping you craft stories that reach magical heights

Thank you for providing such detailed and helpful feedback.  The editor’s letter was incredibly helpful in giving me a broad scope of what was and was not working.  The call as well was super helpful as it was nice to talk through some of the ideas I’ve had for reworking the piece.  Would definitely recommend you to others!  Thank you!

is my manuscript ready for this stage?

A developmental edit is a great next step once you’ve got a complete manuscript and you feel it’s in as good a shape as you can manage without more feedback.

what does this service involve?

A developmental edit (sometimes referred to as a structural edit) is about making sure you’re telling your story as well as you possibly can, ensuring you've created a compelling narrative that readers will be absorbed in. It considers all the big-picture elements of your story such as plot and structure, voice, character development, point of view, tense, pacing and writing style. I'll discuss the elements that are already working really well for you, as well as any areas that would benefit from being tightened up. This is the more in-depth version of a manuscript critique.

I’ll read through your manuscript twice, leaving you comments all the way through, and write you an editorial letter reviewing your manuscript.

what will i receive?

  • A detailed editorial report which will highlight the areas that are already working really well, discuss any areas that could be strengthened and suggest the next steps for your manuscript.
  • Comments throughout your manuscript to identify the areas discussed and suggest solutions where needed.
  • For manuscripts over 70k, the fee includes a one-hour Zoom or phone call to discuss the report and for you to ask any questions you’ve got or discuss how to move forward with your manuscript. (For shorter manuscripts, there is an option to add this on if you want to.)

how much will it cost?

Prices are around £20 per 1,000 words for novels up to 100k. For longer manuscripts, I offer a small discount for anything past the first 100k words. For a personalised quote, please get in touch and send me your manuscript; each quote is influenced by several factors which means I can’t give you an accurate price without reviewing your manuscript.

Please note that short stories are priced differently.
