proofreading for fantastical fiction & outdoors literature

Helping you craft stories that reach magical heights

Overall an excellent edit. Very satisfied. There were hardly any suggestions that were not important, and some were very important indeed. As a matter of fact there were some changes introduced as a result of her observations that will have a major impact on the reading experience. I believe that as a result of Philippa’s edit there has been a huge improvement in the final manuscript.

is my manuscript ready for this stage?

Proofreading is the final step before publication, or before submitting your work to a competition or magazine. At this stage, you should be completely happy with the wording. Any changes made during a proofread should only be those strictly necessary for consistency, correctness, clarity or sense.

If necessary (or as an option for tighter budgets), I offer 'proof-editing', which is a very light copyedit combined with a proofread. I'd only recommend this for manuscripts which are already very clean.

If you're self-publishing, please note that a proofread is unlikely to be a good fit unless a copy edit has already been completed, either by myself or by another professional editor.

what does this service involve?

In a final proofread, I’ll check for issues of:

  • spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • consistency
  • sense throughout the piece, ensuring it doesn’t contradict itself anywhere
  • layout, including page numbers, contents list, any images and any captions.

The proofread can be completed on Word using track changes, or using comments on a PDF.

what will i receive?

  • A proofread manuscript, with changes showing used Word’s Track Changes. I’ll use comments to explain changes where necessary. This enables you to have full control over your manuscript if you want to review each edit individually.
  • A proofread manuscript with all changes approved.
  • A style sheet, which will show all the editorial decisions I’ve made for consistency and clarity when reviewing your manuscript.

how much will it cost?

Prices are around £10–12 per 1,000 words. For a personalised quote, please get in touch and send me your manuscript; each quote is influenced by several factors which means I can’t give you an accurate price without reviewing your manuscript.

Please note that short stories are priced differently.
